Block of Ice (A Poem)

The build up is over time,
A defensiveness feeling so alive.

I know it to be there, but sometimes it is hard to see.
But today, I think I had an epiphany.

It feels like an immediate transformation,
a rapid crystallization.

And there I become, that thick block of ice.
A frozen wall, my self-sacrifice.

I hear sound, and yet I cannot listen
when I am inside this solidifying prison.

I’m still and hard,
and always on guard.

But if you look closely, I am ice that is weeping.
Waking up is the pain and sadness that was almost sleeping.

Yet this ice block is too strong to melt.
I realized that there is so much that hasn’t been felt.

And now I know that this frozen wall precedes me.
And now it’s crying to be free.

It protected me so that I could survive.
And perhaps, maybe one day, I could thrive.

Now I look within and see a heart inside.

I’m curious.

Looking into the transparent wall, I can see a heartbeat.

She’s beautiful!

I offer her warmth.
A breath.
An embrace.

Slowly, we begin to thaw.

Tears melting down my face.

And my heart is open and ready to give,
ready to receive.
